4) leave the table with a profit

Have a goal and an exit plan

This also sounds like common sense, but the truth is that most players don’t have a goal in mind when they sit down to play.

They leave when they are tired, hungry, discouraged, or when they lose their bankroll. They continue to play when they’re winning.

Neither of these is a good strategy for optimizing fun. A better strategy is to have a target, a financial goal that represents “winning” (which of course is more fun than losing).

Again, it should not matter when the player leaves the table, theoretically, as over time a player’s losses and winnings will average out. However, our goal is to win one-half of the sessions we play. This is not going to happen if the player leaves at random times.

Use the rule-of-33” to estimate a profit target

The “Rule of 33,” which was used to estimate bankroll, can also be used to estimate a profit target...

Multiple the average bet by 33

For example, at a $15-minimum bet table, the player should leave when he has a profit of $495 ($15 x 33), especially if he is usung the Rule-of-33 to calculate the bankroll he needs to play for three hours without going broke.

(We’ve fudged this rule a little — it should be the Rule-of-26 if you want to go strictly by the statistical calculation — but in the interest of simplicity and to accommodate the player who is too ecstatic to leave at 26x his average bet, we’ve upped it to 33x.)

let’s admit it…

Even increasing the ration to 33 x the average bet, most players are not going to leave a game if they are winning. This is especially true if the player’s profit goal has been determined with a statistical analysis. (We are all a little skeptical of statistics.) However, given our goal of walking away from half our sessions a winner, this is necessary.

If you want more precision use the table to the right

This table has been created using the statistical formula for calculating maximum proftit. It makes the following assumptions:

- no basic strategy errors

- 55 hands per hour

- 0.5% house edge

- 95% confidence
